COMMERCE, CA—Orion Carport Systems and Construction Inc., Orion Racking’s carport division, is proud to have been selected by Solar Source and Tampa Electric Co. (TECO) to design, fabricate, and install a 1.8 MWdc solar carport system at LEGOLAND Florida. Orion will be featuring its LETO and TITAN carport series at the 150-acre interactive theme park, while SolarWorld will be providing 5,200 of its Sunmodule 345 panels. The system is projected to produce 2,415,113 KWH annually, which is equivalent to CO2 emissions from 1,811,163 pounds of coal burned.

Orion’s LETO is a double column, single cantilever carport system that is designed to shade two parking spaces and can be constructed side by side to shade entire rows. The TITAN is a double column cantilever carport system that is designed for parking arrays of two rows. The system can provide shade for a total of four parking spaces, side by side and nose to nose.

CEO of Orion, Bob Sinai, mentions that he is “ecstatic to install Orion’s carport systems in the Sunshine State, and that this project demonstrates Orion’s commitment to innovate and supply renewable energy technologies to the solar industry.” Bob also reflects back on his childhood and said, “this project is so surreal because as a kid, my favorite past time was to build various objects with LEGOS, and I had this vision of creating something big. I didn’t know exactly what at the time, but now as I look back and connect my childhood memories with the iconic brand to present day, seeing our carport solutions being put together with just the nuts and bolts where no welding is required, is just like putting LEGOS together. This is like a dream come true.”

LEGOLAND Florida partnered up with TECO in April 2014 to celebrate Earth Day by running the entire theme park on renewable solar power. This celebration as well as the installation of Orion’s carport systems marks two out of many conservation initiatives between the two partners. In an interview, Adrian Jones, General Manager of LEGOLAND Florida, said that their partnership with TECO “will give guests a whole new way to learn about renewable energy while also doing something that no other theme park in the U.S. has done before.”
